Glycemic Index. Not a diet.

posted by Lianne Westcot

Going on a diet to GAIN weight? No one wants to do that, however that is often the outcome of short-term or long-term dieting. Other diet pitfalls are giving up nutritious foods, a lower metabolism, and negatives cycles such as weight loss/gain or self-denial/cravings.

I am not a nutrition expert so I purchased a couple of books to learn about the Glycemic Index. Type II Diabetes is part of my family history and I have learned the Glycemic Index can be more effective than carb counting to reduce the swings in blood sugar levels that can eventually lead to insulin dependency. Leaning toward “Lower GI” foods — those that are processed by most people without raising blood sugars — has many benefits including:

  • controlled appetite, fewer cravings
  • lower cortisol, meaning a more level mood
  • higher energy, fewer “crashes”
  • less fat sent to “storage”
  • regular healthy eating, rather than strict diets
I will share information about the books and what I am learning in future updates!
